This issue comes out in the aftermath of Yom Kippur, Sukkoth, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah – and amazingly, despite the stoppages created by the ‘non-workable’ days, we made our delivery date.

This was partly due to the fact that strict measures were adopted in regard to deadlines and also the limiting of pages to 36, which is somewhat below what has become our regular size.

But still, readers will get a pretty good idea of noteworthy activity here in the Western Cape over the past month or so – other than the boisterous celebrations of Simchat Torah, which could not make our deadline cut. However, in a last minute push, we did manage to secure some pictorial coverage of Sukkoth on the front page.

Maccabi Western Province held their first ever Action Day on Sunday 28 September 2008, with over 100 participants and supporters attending the sporting day. Senior and Junior Cricket, as well as open Netball roundrobin tournaments were held.

The level of play was extremely high, with plenty of classic cover drives, sixes, run-outs, goals and even a hat-trick! In fact, the referees even suggested that a few of the teams would be competitive in league play — something that Maccabi Western Province is considering, so please watch this space!

Holocaust Centre’s 10th Anniversary invitation

During the past 10 years over 200 000 people have visited the Cape Town Holocaust Centre, including 100 000 who have participated in our Holocaust and Human Rights workshops: 55 000 High school learners, 5 800 Educators, 2 300 Police Services personnel, 925 Correctional Services personnel and many other diverse groups.

As we enter our 10th anniversary year, we would like to offer you a glimpse into A Day in the Life of the Cape Town Holocaust Centre, to share with you some of the Centre’s experiences in our challenging and rewarding work over the last decade, teaching about the dangers of prejudice, racism and discrimination.

Hermanus Shul and Community Centre consecrated to much acclaim

In a reversal of the trend for synagogues in rural communities, to close as their members migrated to the urban centres, the newly-built synagogue and community centre of the Hermanus Hebrew Congregation was consecrated in the presence of communal dignitaries and representatives of the different faith groups of the seaside town on Sunday 7 September.

Also present was Freda Auerbach, Hermanus’s longest-standing Jewish resident, who has lived there for 68 years. Though the town has 31 permanent Jewish residents, the numbers swell considerably over weekends and holiday periods, when the estimated 349 holiday home owners arrive at the popular resort.

Chief Rabbi Dr Warren Goldstein, who offi ciated at the ceremony, noted that the yahrzeit of the late chief rabbi Cyril Harris was due to fall during the coming week.
“The hand of Hashem has guided us to have (the ceremony) two days before his yahrzeit — it wasn’t planned that way,” he said.

Bnoth Zion WIZO Yom Tov market

The annual Yomtov Market held by Bnoth Zion WIZO is the largest fundraising event of the year and members of the organisation work very hard to make it a success. Their efforts are rewarded when crowds representing all age groups arrive to have fun, buy their yomtov gifts and ‘gerichten’ and enjoy the occasion.

This year’s many activities for young children in the outside marquee included an animal farm and a magician show and were well organised by enthusiastic Aviv branches. The main hall was well stocked with tables displaying gift presentations, homemade cakes, biscuits, kichlach, and taiglach. And bargains were available at the collectibles and jewellery stalls.

Gift presentations made it easy for those shopping for yomtov gifts and, as ever, there was plenty of traditional fare to eat — bagels and salmon, hot beef on rye, cheese blintzes, bulkes, hot soup and perogen, as well as fresh farm strawberries, boerewors rolls, hotdogs, samoosas and spring rolls.
