December 2008

December 08 Cape Jewish Chronicle PDFAt the outset, I must explain the reason for the rather belated appearance of this issue on the web, needing, as it did to coincide with the postage of the ‘hard’ copies.

The paper was always intended to be posted later than all previous months, as it is a combined December/January edition and thus needs to be staggered somewhat, to offset the long wait for the February 2009 issue.

In this instance, however, while production was ready on time for home and web-postage by about 5 December, the technical part of the process was dramatically delayed by the repro house, causing a spiraling of delays at the printers and distributors. This latest public holiday on 16 December did not help matters.

Historic AGM consolidates the 7 welfare organisations

Monday, December 15th, 2008

“This consolidated AGM is, I believe, a defining moment for welfare for the Jewish Community of Cape Town,” said Chairman Paul Berman at the historic first ever combined AGM of the 7 welfare organisations in Cape Town: ASTRA (Jewish Sheltered Employment Centre), Rosecourt (Rosecourt House & Vriende House), Cape Jewish Seniors Association, Glendale, Highlands House, Jewish Community Services, Nechama and Oranjia Child & Youth Centre. The meeting took place at the Albow Centre on 4 November.

“Today is the culmination of four years of intense commitment, sacrifice and dedication by a group of outstanding individuals representing all the seven welfare bodies.”

The process had taken four years to create a unified, committed and engaged welfare organisation known as Jewish Care Cape, he said.

“A wealth of experience, passion and energy is contained in this room — we have a duty to awaken the endless possibilities in others – and encourage them to transform. We have together, as Jewish Care Cape, successfully completed the process of transformation by entering into a new world of possibilities.

Newcomers enjoy communal hospitality at UJC cocktail party

Monday, December 15th, 2008
Mayor Helen Zille and UHS chairman Brian Goldberg

“The breakaway party is very good for South Africa”, Mayor Helen Zille told the guests at a United Jewish Campaign cocktail party on Thursday evening, 13 November, to welcome Jewish newcomers to Cape Town, and introduce them to Jewish leadership and community organisations. It would loosen the political log-jam by legitimising the right of people to vote for a party other than the ANC without feeling a sense of disloyalty.

Nina Kovensky opened the proceedings and Marco Van Embden, chairman of the UJC, welcomed Mayor Zille and the newcomers, 25 families and over 40 beneficiaries to the gathering. On behalf of the City, Mayor Zille extended a warm welcome to the new residents and thanked them for settling here.

“We need to attract middle class people who can bring jobs, investments and tax income in order to ensure job opportunities. Thank goodness they choose to stay and invest. If they don’t, it would be much harder for us and for the poorer residents, because people like you pay your rates and taxes and we use this money to make life more bearable for the poor.”

YAD’s Annual Golf Day tees off yet again

Monday, December 15th, 2008

On Thursday 6 November YAD held its annual Corporate Charity Golf Day at the King David Golf Club.

This was YAD’s 7th such annual event and each year the committee strives to make it extra special. A golf day is a composite of many critical elements, a base requirement being passionate golfers — and thank goodness there is never a shortage of those!

A successful golf day must have the formation of vital partnerships, with a variety of supporters. YAD has fortunately been blessed with an abundance of open-hearted supporters, larger and smaller, and loyal stalwarts as well as brand new ones — all playing vital roles as part of the whole.

A list appears on these pages acknowledging all of the generous sponsors of this premier event. YAD honours them and also those companies and individuals who stepped up to the ‘tee’, by sponsoring wonderful prizes, goodie bag contents and delicious foodstuffs and refreshments.

The Dudu Fisher Concert

The Western Province Zionist Council commenced Israel’s 60th Anniversary celebrations with THE DUDU FISHER CONCERT. This outstanding performer entertained a full house at the BOE Auditorium, with many people disappointed at not being able to get seats.

Adv Jonathan Silke and Moonyeen Castle met with a very high profile Israeli delegation, which included Silvan Shalom — former Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ronit Tirosh — Member of the Knesset and Ambassador Levanon — the Israeli Ambassador in Geneva, who were in South Africa for the Inter Parliamentary Union Conference.

Well done, Tamar Lazarus

We congratulated Tamar Lazarus, the recipient of the 2008 Herzl Award, which was presented to her at the WPZC Conference by the chairman of the SAZF, Avrom Krengel. Barney Singer was the proud recipient of the Jerusalem Award, presented to him at a luncheon in his honour by Ze’ev Bielski, chairman of the Jewish Agency and WZO.
