We are now well and truly in 5770 and we start the cycle once again. This issue, while relatively subdued compared to its 64-page predecessor, probably has as much text and editorial.

The recent historic national Board of Deputies conference drew top international Jewish leaders who shared global perspectives, another major presence being SA President Jacob Zuma. This is well covered, with an additional fascinating piece on the Middle East by Hagai Segal – his penultimate, unfortunately, for this publication.

Hate speech was an assault on the purposes of freedom of speech and should be excluded from its ambit, said the Honourable Irwin Cotler at a breakfast meeting held under the auspices of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies (Cape Council) at Café Riteve on Wednesday 26 August.

81st Anniversary of Obs-Mowbray Shul

On Sunday 16 August a special service was held to celebrate the 81st anniversary of the beautiful and historic Observatory-Mowbray Shul in William Street which has been holding services since 1928.

John Copelyn, CEO of Hosken Consolidated Investments (HCI) Limited, inspired his audience at a YAD business breakfast sponsored by Investec, with a message of optimism about the country’s future, saying there were “great opportunities” ahead. He said this belief, however, was not always shared in the business community.

Israel-Russia relations put to the test as ‘Arctic Sea’ episode takes an intriguing turn

A mystery regarding a missing cargo ship has become the latest suggestion of a growing covert war going on between Israel and Iran, involving a variety of actors connected with both. What seemed initially as the latest piracy story to hit the news quickly moved into something quite different, and now resembles an elaborate plot from a James Bond movie.

The Maltese-flagged Arctic Sea and its 15 Russian crew mysteriously vanished in July days after leaving Finland, carrying, according to its official manifest, a cargo of timber to Algeria. It was found on August 16 off the coast of West Africa, with the Russian navy announcing that it had captured the hijackers and rescued the crew. Eight men were later charged by the Russians with hijacking and piracy.
